#i’ll try to say this with a straight face

To be honest, I’ve never really considered myself a PoC (nor any other Romani, for that matter). But I think it’s due to two reasons: one, I have very pale skin (Didikai, half Irish),…

I do not consider myself a person of color. I am looked at as a white person. Even with off-hand comments…I have privilege over people with brown skin. Period. I didnt ask for that privilege, but I have it. Being Romani in America comes with a unique set of issues…but I cannot and will not consider myself a person of color. I feel that its dishonest because I do not deal with the same issues as PoC in this country. As I said, being Romani comes with a unique set of issues. My grandmother was a person of color. My mother is very tan, but in this country I am looked at as “white.” Even if its “muddy” ..its still white. I am a staunch ally to PoC but I cannot take away from their struggles by considering myself a person of color when I am not viewed as one by people in this country and despite a unique set of challenges, I largely benefit from white privilege.

This.

I did at first. But I suppose it was easier with my mother?

She is full-blood Romani and is very dark skinned. I got an interesting blend of skin tones from her and my dad. Him being as caucasian as they come. I’m pale, but my skin has an olive-y tint to it. In fact, most people would assume I was part asian when they met me.

I always knew I wasnt totally white, and people I met would insist I wasn’t totally white, even on first meeting, but It took a few years of people going

“Oh mah gash, are you like, part korean or something!? Your skin just has like, a weird color to it.”

Before I finally would just say to people “My mother is dark skinned” and they would get the picture.

I have the same issue. I’m full-blooded but apparently all the recessive genes decided it was a Qristina party (at least I didn’t get the blonde hair)… but I have tri-colour eyes, which people tell me are *Asian looking* and some even insist could *almost have the folds* at which point I tell them to quit being a dick.

I also have tan skin… but not dark. And, if I stay in my house as much as I have been (thanks grad school) I fade to a sickly colour.

People don’t know what to make of me, so in truth, most don’t. I don’t “act white” … I’m too weird. And my skin is odd.

However, my entire family, with the exception of my mother’s mother are definitely PoC.

Mami has darker skin, dark hair, brown eyes. My dad used to be white blonde but his hair has gotten dark brown, his eyes are brown and his skin is olive and he gets quite dark when he tans. Me, on the other hand, I’m lighter than a lot of white people so… I don’t tan, I burn. My hair went from red, to a white blonde to brown (it’s rather dark now) naturally. My eyes have two colours and people often tell me I look exotic or think I’m a foreigner. Then don’t know what to make of my super light skin contrasting with my other features (eyes shape and colour, cheekbones, hair etc). Plus not believing I’m related to my darker relatives.

Not at all. It is the same for me (didikai, really pale skin). We say we are italian. I never really gave much thought about it in these terms until recently. In Brasil you are mostly classified by your appearance, not heritage. My mami passes as white here but she would never pass in the USA or Europe. I always thought of myself more or less like pale, kind of white but not white as well. I suppose PoC does make more sense. But it’s a realization process indeed.

I’m not sure about anyone else in the e-kumpanija, but my dad goes NUTS around Hallowe’en. I always had awesome costumes, we carved pumpkins, he told TERRIFYING stories about Shilmulo (and another host of stories about fake shilmulo budjo…

GREAT thread.  I’ve never done potato candles before, but I had heard some people do similar things.  (Post some pics some time)  I gotta make a mental list of people here who speak Kalderash and can correct my grammar haha!

So, things I remember from my family….

Liliyako - Vampire (I think Shilmulo literally means “Cold Dead”?)

Phirimasko-Mulo - Zombie (I think it literally means something like “worn/bad/aging face dead”?)

Ruvalo - Werewolf (Though stories about all sorts of animal-like creatures were prevalent in my childhood.  I love bears!)

I also know a handful of words for “fairy-type people”, but I’ve always been under the impression that our stories were kinda like the Irish (or maybe I got that impression because my other half is Irish and mixed stories? lol) in that anything that isn’t a witch, god, demon, or human…must be a fairy?

I’ll probably think of some throughout the day haha

Rromane words about fairy-type people are SIGNIFICANTLY RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS. TELL ME ALL OF THEM. :D

Fairy words I only remember 2:

Phakali - faeries

Kezali - fairy of the woods or water

Here in Brasil we don’t really celebrate Halloween (now a bit, coz of movies, english schools and such) but we have Finados on November the first,m which is the day of the dead (finados means dead people).

It was always a time of family, cleaning the family tombs, remembring our dead, ourselves and stories (plus eating a lot).

I heard about the two-hearted ones but I don’t remember the word for it. As mami told the story salt was very important as well as ripping out the heart completely. There were also witch stories, chovexani (I don’t know if our word is different or if I’m remembering it wrong, it’s been a while). Never heard of dzal dumeha but that sounds scary.

My great-grandma was also drabarni and she read fortunes (palms and coffee instead of tea) and made some herb remedies we still use (mostly ointments-like stuff), they are really good.

I really wonder about how different our customs are coz even though only my great-grandma spoke calo I don’t know what exactly came from which side of the family, the cale or the kalderash tradition wise.
